William Enoch Williams, Age 23
Private, 15264, 5th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
I could find out very little about William, He had been born at Shifnal, but was living at Dark Lane, Malinslee when he joined the army.
He had not been with his battalion long and just before going up to the line had been seen with his brother George, who had given him an extra shirt and socks as he had no spare ones. The .5th battalion were on a tour of duty in trenches north of the Menin road in the Ypres salient on the day that William was killed, the 16th October 1917.
George had written from Belgium about his meeting with William “I have only met my brother Will and Len Rufus out here — it was the same day as my brother was killed. The weather is awful — we are up to our knees in mud and water. It would be a pleasure to be in the old town again”.
William’s name is found on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing, panels 112 – 113.
